Pillar 3a is the most powerful legal tax-saving instrument in Switzerland. And since 2026, there's a fundamental innovation: you can catch up on missed contributions for the first time.
What Is Pillar 3a?
Pillar 3a belongs to the private pension system in Switzerland's 3-pillar model. It supplements AHV (1st pillar) and the pension fund (2nd pillar). Unlike the free pension (Pillar 3b), Pillar 3a is tax-privileged - you pay less tax when you contribute.
Maximum Amounts 2026
Small Contribution (with pension fund)
For employees and self-employed who are affiliated with a 2nd pillar pension fund. This applies to the vast majority of employees.
Large Contribution (without pension fund)
For self-employed without a 2nd pillar. Makes Pillar 3a particularly important for self-employed people without pension funds.
New from 2026: Back-Payment of Missed Contributions
This is the biggest innovation since Pillar 3a was introduced in 1987: from tax year 2026, you can catch up on missed contributions - retroactively for up to 10 years.
- Only gaps from 2025: Back-payments only possible for contribution gaps from January 1, 2025 onwards
- Earliest catch-up 2026: First back-payment possible in 2026 - for a gap from 2025
- Maximum back-payment per year: CHF 7,258
- Regular contribution first: You must first fully pay the regular maximum in the year of back-payment
- 10 years time: A 2025 gap can be caught up until end of 2035
You only paid CHF 3,000 instead of CHF 7,258 into Pillar 3a in 2025. Gap: CHF 4,258.
In 2026, you first pay the regular CHF 7,258. Then you can additionally pay CHF 4,258 as back-payment for 2025. Total tax deduction 2026: CHF 11,516.
Tax Savings by Income Level (Example Zurich)
| Taxable Income | Marginal Tax Rate | Savings on CHF 7,258 |
|---|---|---|
| CHF 50,000 | approx. 22% | approx. CHF 1,600 |
| CHF 80,000 | approx. 28% | approx. CHF 2,030 |
| CHF 120,000 | approx. 33% | approx. CHF 2,400 |
| CHF 200,000 | approx. 37% | approx. CHF 2,685 |
When and How to Withdraw Pillar 3a?
Regular withdrawal: earliest 5 years before and latest 5 years after reaching reference age (65). Early withdrawal possible for: home ownership purchase, starting self-employment, permanently leaving Switzerland, receiving a full IV disability pension, or buying into pension fund.
Staggered Withdrawal: Save Thousands in Taxes
Because capital withdrawal tax is progressive, it pays to spread withdrawals over several years using multiple 3a accounts.
CHF 200,000 total, Canton Zurich:
Lump sum withdrawal: tax approx. CHF 15,000-18,000
Staggered over 5 years (CHF 40,000 each): tax total approx. CHF 7,500-9,000
Savings: approx. CHF 7,000-9,000
3 to 5 accounts are optimal for most people. Open a new 3a account each year instead of always topping up the same one.
