Crypto Taxes Switzerland 2026: Bitcoin, Ethereum & Co.

You own Bitcoin, Ethereum or other cryptocurrencies and wonder how taxation works in Switzerland? The good news upfront: Switzerland is one of the most crypto-friendly countries in the world. Capital gains from private trading are tax-free. Still, there's plenty to consider.

Basics: How Does Switzerland Tax Crypto?

Switzerland treats cryptocurrencies as movable assets - comparable to cash, precious metals or securities. Three tax levels apply:

Wealth Tax: Declaring Crypto Correctly

Every person with tax residency in Switzerland must declare crypto holdings. Valuation is per December 31. The ESTV publishes official tax rates for major cryptos on the ICTax portal (ictax.admin.ch).

Capital Gains: When Tax-Free, When Not?

Capital gains from private cryptocurrency trading are tax-free in Switzerland. This applies to buying and selling, as well as token swaps.

Important

Tax exemption only applies to private assets. If the tax authority classifies you as a professional trader, all gains are taxed as income - and AHV contributions apply too.

Professional Trading: The 5 Safe Haven Criteria

You're considered a private investor if you meet all five criteria simultaneously:

CriterionThreshold
1. Holding periodAt least 6 months between purchase and sale
2. Trading volumeTransaction volume under 5x the beginning-of-year balance
3. Capital gains vs. incomeRealised gains under 50% of taxable income
4. LeverageNo borrowed capital (no leverage, no loans to buy)
5. DerivativesDerivatives only for hedging, not speculation

Staking, Mining, Airdrops and DeFi

Staking Rewards: Taxable income at market value when received.

Mining: Counts as self-employed activity. Mined coins taxable as income. Hardware and electricity costs deductible.

Airdrops: Taxable income at market value when received.

DeFi: Liquidity providing rewards, lending interest, and yield farming rewards are all taxable income. Token swaps are tax-free for private investors.

From 2027: CARF and Automatic Data Exchange

Switzerland implements the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) from 2027. Exchanges must systematically collect customer transaction data, which will be shared internationally from 2028. Anyone who hasn't fully declared crypto holdings should do so now.

Practical Tip

Costs for crypto tax software and related tax advice are deductible in most cantons as asset management costs.
